去年，印度有21%的煤炭消费量依靠进口，约为1.52亿吨。
电力需求的上升迫使印度提高国内煤炭产量，印度国有煤炭公司（CIL）不得不通过增加进口量，来满足国内需求。
有消息人士透露，目前，印度约有6.5万兆瓦的电力项目处于停产状态。
预计，到2015年，印度的煤炭需求量为5.52亿吨，但是供应量只有4.47亿吨，留下1.05亿吨的供应缺口。到2040年，印度的燃煤发电量将达到910太瓦时（1太瓦时等于10亿千瓦时），是2010年的2倍多，与此同时，用来发电的煤炭消费量也将增加1倍。
中央昆士兰州大学的约翰·罗尔夫教授说，印度会从澳大利亚进口来源稳定、高质量的煤炭。
罗尔夫教授说，尤其是对昆士兰州来说，这是个好消息。目前，在加利利盆地有许多煤炭项目等待投资开发。根据美国ABC电视台的报道，纳伦德拉·莫迪当选为印度总理，他的就职被认为是推动印度经济发展的一个契机。
罗尔夫说：“印度前任政府对于印度早期经济的发展作用突出，但是随着时间的推移，印度的经济增速放缓，在他们试图做出改变的过程中出现了许多问题。莫迪是印度政府的一股新鲜空气，他有更大的权力，来改变印度经济的现状。”
